Welcome to Highlands Road Estate Wines,
We are pleased to share our wine and our experiences with you, and we hope that you will become a member of the Highlands Road family. Pop in for a wine tasting or a relaxed brunch at the dam or just drop us a note to say "hi." As a small, boutique winery, we value all of the members of our extended wine family, and look forward to hosting you sometime soon!
Here is a little bit of our story and how our half-pipe dream came true.
The age old adage of ‘sitting round the fire’ was absolutely true in our case. We, Mary and I, together with her parents and Michael used to talk of one day owning our own vineyard and producing our own wines, and Highlands Road Estate is the culmination of those fireside chats.
Weekend excursions around the winelands of the Western Cape, South Africa, eventually brought us to the beautiful Elgin Valley. Elgin, with its cool climate, abundance of water and great ancient soils seemed to be the perfect place for us. Thus, the hunt for a farm began.
As a partnership, we purchased Highlands Road Estate in 2004 as a neglected fruit farm, and immediately set about replanting with vineyards. We pulled out all the apples and pears, but kept the plums, which we still farm alongside the vineyards. We have planted about 8 Hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and 1.5 Hectares of Pinot Noir over the last 4 years, as we firmly believe these to be the perfect varieties for our cool climate.
We built a wine cellar in 2006, and have been producing our own wine since then. We also have a small deli next to the cellar door overlooking the trout dam and the wonderful views of the Kogelberg Biosphere, as well as a little guest cottage for those wishing to stay over.
Please feel welcome to pop in when you are passing by, we love sharing our dream.
