Winemaking is a dream come true

We would like to officially introduce our winemaker, Vanessa, who joined the team at Highlands Road Estate January 2015 (long overdue introduction, I know).

We thought it to be the perfect opportunity as we have just released the first wine she made at Highlands Road Estate from Harvest throughout fermentation, maturation, bottling, labelling as well as boxing. Her very own Chardonnay 2015.

Going viral: the future for wine marketing?

Going viral: the future for wine marketing?

This past week, Highlands Road Estate was privileged to join 12 other wine estates in a Pinot Noir “tweet-up” tasting event. Sample bottles from each participating winery (divide into three separate “flights”) were tasted and critiqued by a panel of wine and social media gurus in Cape Town, while the local Elgin representation copied the same flights here in Elgin.

Another WIN for Highlands Road Wines

Another fantastic week has passed here at Highlands Road Estate, made sweeter with the news of our title win at the 2014 RisCura White Hot Wine Awards last week Thursday, for our Sine Cera 2012 white blend (Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc). Highlands Road was one of three estates to win the award with a 5/5 star rating, alongside Morgenster and Nitida

Spring time in the Highlands

Spring time is here at last, and what a beautiful time of year it is here at Highlands Road Estate. All around the estate grounds, our plum trees are slowly starting to wake up from their winter sleep and popping out stunning white and pink blossoms. It's quite a sight to see! And what better way to enjoy a gorgeous spring day than with a cold glass of our 2013 Rosé, with a blush almost as beautiful as our plum blossoms, a distinct candyfloss aroma and a lively, fruity acidity- you can't go wrong.

What's the story with that "Oak" AKA a brief history of Oak barrels and their use in the wine industry

What's the story with that "Oak" AKA a brief history of Oak barrels and their use in the wine industry

The use of Oak barrels in the wine making process has become a standard procedure in the wine industry today, allowing producers to playfully develop the characteristic of their wines in terms of their taste, aroma and mouth feel. Who would have guessed that such an important and valued process was discovered by accident?

Something sweet just for you...

Its Friday- and what better way to end of another great week than with something sweet and enticing…

We recently had the fantastic opportunity to taste our newly bottled vintages made by Jacques Maree whilst they await their shiny new labels, and among these was our 100% Sauvignon Blanc Dessert wine.

If you were one of the lucky few who purchased or tasted our previous “sticky” (now completely sold out here on the estate!) you must be on the edge of your seat with excitement that there is another one on its way, SOON! With its intensely golden, straw-colored hue and lingering honeyed notes on the palate, we cannot say enough good things about this little number! And with a limited amount produced (less than 400 bottles) it’s definitely lining up to be a hot commodity.

That having been said, perhaps it’s necessary to also mention than such exquisite wine is not only suited for an after-dinner drink, but can be used as a key ingredient in many desserts and sauces, and this one is one of our favourites!

PS: Follow our social media accounts for continuous updates on our wines and new vintages, or call 071 271 0161 for more info

OLIVE OIL AND DESSERT WINE CAKE (from The Cook’s Companion by Stephanie Alexander)

ingredients

5 eggs, separated
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup dessert wine
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
150g plain flour, sifted
pinch of salt
2 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
icing sugar

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 F). Butter a 24 cm (9 inch) springform cake tin and line base with baking paper. Beat egg yolks with half the sugar until pale and thick, then add wine and oil. Fold in flour and salt and transfer to a large bowl. Wash and dry mixer bowl and beat all 7 egg whites with cream of tartar until they hold soft peaks. Beat in remaining sugar until you have a soft meringue. Fold lightly but thoroughly into yolk mixture. Spoon in to prepared tin and bake for 20 minutes. Turn off oven, cover cake with a buttered round of baking paper and leave to cook slowly. Remove from oven after 15 minutes. (The cake tends to deflate as it cools so it needs to be protected from all sudden changes of temperature.) Dust with icing sugar before serving

Highlands Road Wines heads off to the Free State!

As you may know, Highlands Road Estate partook in this year’s FNB Free State Wine Show, held at the beautiful venue, Leopards and Lace just outside of Bloemfontein on 31 July- 01 August 2014.

This was our first time attending the show, and after a stressful delay at Cape Town International Airport, we set off for Bloem on Thursday 31 July, narrowly making it for the opening of the show at 17:00 that evening! Talk about an adrenalin rush, but it was nothing compared to the excitement and commotion that was to ensue as over 200 guests made their way inside the conference hall, all eager to taste, learn about and enjoy some of South Africa’s best wines.

Over 35 estates participated in this year’s event, including Groot Constantia, Beyerskloof and Boekenhoutskloof as well as Elgin representatives Oneiric, Paul Cluver and Highlands Road Estate (of course). Sales on the night were done exclusively through Cybercellar, providing customers the ease of door-to-door delivery.

Despite the “small-town” atmosphere that Bloemfontein has, we were delightfully surprised to find so many people that were looking for more than just “a full glass”- people came looking for specific flavours and aromas, but were also open to trying new varietals not so easily found in local liquor stores.

The second night of the event again brought out the crowds and ended with a relaxed social gathering of the various representatives of each wine estate. New friends were made with hopes of extending our reach in Bloemfontein, and we hope to bring you news of Highlands Road in the Free State very soon!

All in all it was another great event, superbly organized by FNB and Leopards & Lace- thank you to those who came out and enjoyed our wines with us. We hope to see you again next year!
